Michele
Anastasio has landed what some might consider a pretty
cool job. The 47-year-old Port St. Lucie resident was
recently appointed chairwoman of the Port St. Lucie
Film Commission, a governmental department charged with
enticing movie and video producers to use the city as
a filming location. A singer, composer and all-around
entertainer herself, Anastasio has been an active member
of the commission since 1999.
Q:
What does the Film Commission do?
A:
We try to bring in revenue from film companies, we support
them when they come in and try to find them all the
services they'll need while they're in town. But we're
also promoting arts in our town, such as music, painting,
poetry anything and everything under the umbrella
of arts.
Q:
How does it work?
A:
If a film company e-mails us and says they're looking
for a house here or on the beach to film in, or the
stadium, we send pictures over the Internet and try
to bring in business. We're always getting e-mail every
week for movies, music videos, any kind of video production.
Q:
What will you focus on as the new chairwoman?
A:
We want to bring as much revenue into town as we possibly
can to get people work, but I also want to bring arts
to our youth. We'll have poetry competitions, arts and
music events to get the kids involved in something and
get them out of the house.
Q:
What projects are on the horizon?
A:
There's a film called "Love Trap," that's
premiering Feb. 10; it was shot in Port St. Lucie. We're
also instituting a film festival here, which will probably
be happening in January 2007.
Q:
Can the community get involved?
A:
Yes. We want more people, so that's why we're getting
the word out, to see who's available. We need people
who would do gofer work, production assistants, caterers
anything that has to do with the making of film.
We also have "The Book," which is a production
book; it lists all the local services available, such
as photographers, makeup artists, lawyers, everything.
It's like a phone book for the movie industry, and people
who want to get involved in the business can put their
name in it for free.
